The Coding Terminologies

The Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System is a collection of healthcare procedure codes based on the American Medical Association's Current Procedural Terminology. They are mainly used for various government programs such as Medicare & Medicaid for processing health insurance claims. HCPCS includes two medical code sets namely HCPCS Level I & Level II.


Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRG) are a patient classification system used to classify hospital patients based on their medical diagnoses, procedures, and other factors. The DRG system determines how much hospitals are paid for treating patients.


Modifiers are two-digit codes that provide additional information about a medical process. They are used to indicate that a particular service or procedure that has been performed has been altered by a certain circumstance; however, it has not changed in its definition or code.

POS Codes

Place of Service (POS) codes are primarily used to indicate the location where a particular medical service was provided. These codes are used to differentiate between services provided in a hospital, office, or other places.
